Tony Docherty

Knife Designer and Maker

Photographic portrait of artisan knife maker Tony Docherty

Tony Docherty - Doco - has been supplying leading wood galleries in Western Australia and the Eastern States since the early nineties. In the last decade, Doco has pursued his passion for the art of knife making. He learned the craft under the direction of Australia’s first master knife smith, Thomas Gerner.

He makes a large range from stainless kitchen knives to choppers, hunting knives and everyday camp knives.

Doco forges his own Damascus with patterns ranging from ladder, raindrop, twist and random, combining 1084 and 15n20 carbon steels, drawn into billets straight from the forge.

For his knife handles, Doco uses predominately West Australian hardwoods - semi desert acacias such as mulga, miniritchie, eramea, and tetragonaphylla . He also utilises sheoak, concentrating on pieces with strong figure, combining these woods with brass, buffalo horn and antler, with hints of a material called G10.

Doco’s knives are made to be used, and with due care, will give a lifetime of service.
